who we are

A shipyard to be experienced

At the Chowgule Global Private Limited, we’ve had a long tradition of operating in and providing services to the marine industry. Our journey started in the 1930s as shipping agents in the port town of Mormugao, Goa. Over the subsequent decades, we’ve diversified (and consolidated) our maritime capabilities.

Today, we have operations in shiprepair (with a focus on export vessels for European markets and the Indian Navy and Coast Guard fleet), port infrastructure and cargo terminals, shipping with bulk carriers, chemical tankers and turnkey supply chain and shipping services.

Chowgule Lavgan

Over time, many of our infrastructure developments have been constrained by the areas we operated from – availability of land, draft, etc. We felt that there was an opportunity to grow and showcase a facility in India that was truly world class – in terms of its layout, planning, facilities, equipment, service offerings and quality of people.

It is from this vision that the Chowgule Global Private Limited developed the Lavgan Shiprepair Pvt Ltd. We’re proud of the people that have contributed to its development – from the on-time and within-budget construction to the range of work that we’ve been able to successfully deliver since its inception in 2014.

We develop our products to meet client needs and help them expanding into new markets

Shiprepair

A century driven by values

Chowgule was established in 1916 with a production facility for roofing tiles. Over the subsequent decades and the addition of the sons of the founder to the business, the operations grew to include trading of various commodities, consumer goods and automobiles. This included a shipment in 1947 of manganese ore from Goa to Czechoslovakia – the first taste of the resources mining and trading business for the 3 brothers that ran the business.

In 1950, the brothers saw an opportunity to grow the mining operations – especially in light of the infrastructure led post-war growth plan of Japan. The Japanese steel mills needed a reliable source of iron ore, the main raw material

for their production process. Vishvasrao Chowgule went to Japan and negotiated an agreement wherein the Japanese would provide him the capital to start a mechanized mining operation and he would repay the capital through the cost of ore that he would supply. The mechanized mining operation – the first in India – necessitated the need for various ancillary support businesses that were not properly established in newly independent India. Thus, the Chowgule’s expanded in order to service this need – from the building and repairs of barges to the production of industrial explosives.

Over the subsequent years, each of the new businesses charted their own growth path – developing their products to meet client needs and expanding into new markets.
